Eurydice, a play by Sarah Ruhl
Artists
Community Theatre presents “Eurydice,” by Sarah Ruhl. The script is derived from the Greek myth of
Orpheus but presents the tale through the perspective of Eurydice, his
wife. This production sparkles with wit
and lends a whimsical touch to the classic Greek tragedy.
The play
begins with Eurydice and Orpheus, two young lovers who are about to get
married. In the underworld, Eurydice’s
dead father has managed to preserve his ability to read and write, and tries to
send her letters. On her wedding day,
Eurydice falls to her death and descends to the underworld in an elevator. She is greeted by her father, as well as a
chorus of menacing stones. The Lord of
the Underworld, who enters as a child riding a tricycle, makes a deal with
Orpheus and allows him to take Eurydice back to the living. Eurydice is torn over whether to go back with
her husband or stay with her father.
“Eurydice”
features brilliant characterizations. The cast
comprises Molly Quinn, Avery Scott, Andrew Hook, Jeffrey Deitch, Jayci Aragon,
and Molly Christensen.
Erin
O’Connor makes her post-graduate directing debut. Ms. O’Connor earned a B.A. in theatre with an
emphasis in directing and performance from Fort Lewis College. She has performed in several plays including
“Little Women,” “Macbeth,” and “Why Torture Is Wrong And The People Who Love
Them.”
